Custom Wedding Bands
How to Work with a Designer to Create Custom Wedding Bands
As featured in Quality of Life Magazne,
By Jewelry & Gemology Guru, DeNise Bowers
Creating custom wedding bands can be one of the most memorable experiences for a couple embarking on a new life together. Even if you are redesigning your bands before renewing your vows as many couples do. It doesn’t have to be stressful, and it can actually be fun. Here is how to get started!
If you don’t have a family jeweler, ask friends and relatives for a recommendation. This way you can be comfortable with who you will have do your work. But before you ask to see the designer, prepare a bit. Have some strong ideas of what you both want as far as style, size, width, color, texture etc. If there will be a gemstone or a few involved, also be sure you are selecting gems that are tough, and durable for everyday wear. Your designer can advise you in this regard. Next, be sure you have shopped around a bit and taken a look at a few designs in other stores, and know the prices of those items which may be comparable in size and weight to what you want to have done. Make sure you have the funds available to get the job done. Normally, a deposit will be required to get the job started, and the balance due upon completion.
When you sit down with the designer, you may discuss all these things mentioned, you’ll have your fingers sized and the designer will usually produce a color design either hand rendered, or computer generated from your description. This takes time, so don’t expect it the same day. Often times a wax pattern can be produced which will be used in the casting process. You may be asked to come in and approve a rendered design, or a wax pattern of your design. Once the design is approved, the jeweler goes to work, and you will be notified as soon as the pieces are finished.
Sometimes items can be made from all new materials, but often time’s couples have received great grandma’s rings, and they wish to use them in the new piece. Remember, white gold, yellow gold and platinum cannot be mixed into the melting pot. If your rings will be made in the same type and color of metal as the inherited piece, you are in good shape. You will save money by using them in the new rings. Some jewelers will even give you credit against your bill for the unused metal. But, don’t be surprised if they need to add new gold to the job, you may not have quite enough. So start planning, get your ideas together and let your designer do the magic! And don’t forget to have fun!
Happy creating!
