January birthstone, GarnetJanuary birthstone is Garnet

A beautiful Deep Red color

Creative Celebrations Magazine

If you could hold a handful of wet uncut garnets, you would see how they resemble pomegranate seeds. This is why they are named Garnet, from the Latin term “granatus” which means “seed”. Although garnet comes in other colors, the traditional birthstone color for January is the deep red variety of garnet.  Since garnet is a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Moh’s scale. It is generally rated ”good” for every day wear.

Garnet occurs in most every color except blue.  Mozambique garnet is a deep red with hues of orange and brown. Rhodolite is a purplish red, Hessonite and Spessartite garnet are orange varieties.  Tsavorite and Demantoid garnets are the green variety.  Color change garnets exhibit an "alexandrite-like" effect when viewed in natural light or artificial lighting. Garnets have been mined in places such as Africa, Australia, India, Russia, South America , Sri Lanka and in the United States, in Arizona and Idaho.  The color differences are due to the mineral compositions of the gems such as manganese, Iron and calcium among other combinations.

One of the legends surrounding the garnet was a Biblical legend that Noah hung garnets on the ark to light his way through the dark and stormy nights of God's wrath.  There is a Greek myth of the young goddess of sunshine named Persephone.  It was said that she was abducted by Hades, god of the underworld. Hades eventually released her, but not before he offered her pomegranate seeds, which he thought would guarantee her return to him. While there is mention of garnets being used by the Greeks and Romans, there are texts spread across India which describe garnets being worn as amulets against plague and ill health.

Garnet jewelry has a long history as it has been found among the graves of lake dwellers dating back as far as the Bronze age.

Some believe garnet's powers include healing, strength, and protection and it is often worn to relieve inflammations of the skin. It is also believed to regulate the heart and blood flow and aid in curing depression.

Giving Garnet as a gift is symbolic of love and the desire for a loved one's safe travel and speedy homecoming.

Although it is the Birthstone for January, Garnet can be worn by anyone who desires it, any time of year. It is easily cleaned at home with mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush and warm water. Garnet can be professionally cleaned in an ultrasonic as well.
